Millions love March Madness for its
unpredictability, its excitement and its ultimate ability to decide the
best team in the land. The one downside, of course, is watching a
bracket go up in flames as two No. 1 seeds get bounced in the second
round.
In the north valley, there's a different kind of competition: burrito
supremacy. With more than 40 trucks, taquerias, restaurants and more in
the greater Chico area and counting — a new one popped up literally as
this story was being researched — there are many who can lay claim to
putting together a good burrito on the cheap.
But it does beg the question: Which is best? To answer it, the
Enterprise-Record has put together its own form of March Madness,
swapping out basketball for burritos.
One thing about our contest that those of you with busted NCAA
tournament brackets-turned-burrito placemats will surely like, however,
is there will be no flukes and, with tons of tasty burritos to try, no
losers.
Instead, it's a simple vote. We've wracked our brains, taken
reader recommendations on Facebook and Twitter, driven around the area
and eaten a lot of burritos to compile our list of competitors. No shady
selection committee or at-large bids here.
Click on the Vote tab,
find your favorite Mexican establishment and vote for it. You can do it
as many times as you want. You can add comments about your preferred
burrito. You can get your like-minded friends to vote and comment as
well. And nobody will blame you if you need to swing by a few taco
trucks to get a more educated opinion — unlike the NCAA tournament, your
research of your picks actually matters.
The first round will last two weeks, paring the field down to 32, and
then we'll cut the field in half every week until we get a winner.
Which heavy favorites will make the Final Four? Is it a mobile Mexican
merchant, like Tacos El Paisa or Tacos El Pinolero, that might take down
a mighty chain restaurant like Chipotle? Is it a local restaurant, like
Tres Hombres or Casa Ramos, that serves the best burrito? Or could a
non-Chico establishment, like Gridley's Casa Lupe or Durham's California
Tacos, garner enough support to supply an upset?
Unlike their NCAA brackets, voting participants in Burrito
Madness will have a say in the final result, and 50 voters will receive a
free burrito, because even the best one is better when it doesn't cost
anything.
Visit our website, cast your votes and get your friends to share
theirs, too. Share your decision on Twitter, using the hashtag
#BurritoMadness. Make sure the best burrito in the north valley gets the
glory, even if burritos can't cut down the nets in Atlanta.
